Basic knowledge of batch ball mills

What is a batch ball mill?

When a certain amount of balls, which are the grinding medium, are put into a cylindrical container and rotated around a horizontal axis, the balls are lifted up to a certain height along the inner wall as the cylindrical container rotates, and then slide along the inner wall. It circulates in a fixed direction inside the cylindrical container by rolling down on the ball layer.
When the pulverized raw material is introduced while the balls are circulating, the pulverized raw materials are finely pulverized by the grinding force between the balls and the inner wall, between the balls, and by the impact force when the balls roll down. In addition to crushing, it is also used for mixing and dispersion.

Type of lining material

By changing the type of lining material, ball mills can be used with various raw materials (abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, contamination, etc.).
Our company has the following experience, but please contact us if you have any other desired lining materials.

  • alumina
  • High purity alumina
  • silicon nitride
  • manganese
  • Steel (SS, Herten)
  • natural stone
  • Abrasion resistant rubber
  • chemical resistant rubber
  • MC nylon
  • urethane rubber
  • PP (polypropylene)

Type of ball

The balls (media) fed into the ball mill come in a variety of sizes, ranging from beads of a few millimeters to balls of about 60 mm, depending on the target particle size and raw materials.
There are many other materials available, including alumina, high-purity alumina, silicon nitride, steel, natural stone, and zirconia MC nylon (with iron core).

Internal ball movement ①

If you do a computer simulation of the circulating movement of the balls, you will be able to understand the movement of the balls, which are the grinding medium, better.

General conditions

Ball mill inner diameter 1000mm (with lifter bar)
Ball diameter 50mm
Rotation speed 32rpm

Internal ball movement ② (with lifter bar)

A computer simulation of the circular movement of the ball when a lifter bar is attached.

General conditions
